10 Nigerian Politicians That Allegedly Stole Just As Much As Ibori. April 18, 2012. By Abiodun Badejo

Several Politicians have been investigated and charged with Financial crimes by Nigerian law enforcement agencies only to be set free by an oftentimes compromised Nigerian Judicial System. Unlike Ibori whose new address is Her Majesty’s Prisons, these sacred cows are presently occupying top government positions or eying them.

Most of them were governors who ended their tenure in 2007 after looting the treasury of their respective states.

DSP ALAMEISEIGHYA:

Most prominent is the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepriye Alamieyeseigha who was arrested on January 15, 2005 on money laundering charges by the London Metropolitan Police but fled the country, reportedly disguised as a woman. He was impeached by the Bayelsa State Assembly and his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan became governor. Alameiseighya did not have a single home anywhere in highbrow Lagos until he became governor. He bought a Maybach (the ultra-luxury vehicle seized from Ibori), choice houses in Lagos, Abuja, London and Beverly Hills (for his daughter) with the commonwealth of the people of Bayelsa.

The Nigerian Judicial system let him off the hook and he is careful not to set foot in the UK.

He is now an esteemed statesman who advises President Goodluck Jonathan.

JOLLY NYAME:

Also, the erstwhile Governor of Taraba state, Jolly Nyame was also accused by the EFCC of defrauding his state of over N1.7billion.

Nyame was a three-term governor of the state, having first ruled between 1991 and 1993, before securing another two terms from 1999 to 2007.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and his counsel moved an application for his bail on the grounds that the offenses were bailable in law. He was ordered remanded in prison custody by the court.

The judge said that considering all the evidence before the court, there is a prima facie case against the

former governor, adding that the offence relating to corruption attracts 14 years jail term and can therefore pass for a case that is serious in law.

Now, Nyame is an ACN leader in Taraba after defecting from PDP to the party. He contested for the senatorial seat under the ACN platform with PDP candidate, Aisha Alhassan, a woman who eventually won the poll.

IGBINEDION LUCKY:

Another governor on the trial list was the former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, is the only former governor, who paid back money into state coffers through a plea bargain. He faced a 191-count charge of embezzling N4.3 billion.

A Federal High Court, Enugu had found him guilty and he immediately refunded the N 3 million, a crumb compared to the loaves he embezzled.

The case was determined on January 23, 2008. The EFCC, last February appealed the judgment, urging for stiffer sanctions.

This time, Igbinedion will face a N25 billion fraud trials at the Federal High Court in Benin, in what some observers said was motivated to curtail his political activities.

The EFCC in April 2011 sealed off two choice mansions of the former governor. The two properties are those on No. 7 Justice Fatai Williams Street, Asokoro Abuja and No. 5 Danube Crescent, Maitama Abuja. The exercise was carried out on the heels of a forfeiture order granted the EFCC on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

The court, presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris, authorised EFCC to seize 11 choice properties spread over Benin, Lagos, Abuja and London, traced to the former governor

Now, Igbinedion calls South Africa home, where he has a palatial mansion and it is rumored his son drives a purple Rolls Royce Phantom.

SAMINU TURAKI:

In July 2011, the EFCC re-arraigned Saminu Ibrahim Turaki over a N36 billion fraud before a Federal High Court in Dutse on a 32-count fraud charge.

Samimu Turaki, the former governor of Jigawa state who had dumped the ANPP for the PDP before the expiration of his tenure and later dumped the PDP for the ACN when he sought a return ticket to the Senate which he lost.

Some of the charges included N12 billion withdrawn from the state government treasury for financing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third term mission.

After reading the 32-count charge, Turaki, who appeared in the court in person, pleaded not

guilty to all the charges. His lawyer, Mr. Mahmud Abubakar Magaji, prayed the court to grant bail to his client.

After several arguments by his lawyer and EFCC counsel, the judge, Justice Shehu Yahaya, granted the accused bail based on the conditions granted by the previous judges.

ORJI KALU:

The former Governor of Abia, Uzor Kalu and the founder of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), who in April 2011 lost his bid to represent Abia North Senatorial District in the Senate, is accused by the EFCC of embezzling a N59

billion.

The EFCC is worried that since 2007 when Kalu was arrested and arraigned, the case had been

experiencing long adjournments at the instance of the trial court.

The former governor is standing trial over alleged stealing of N59 billion (equivalent of US$460.9 million), and as a result was arraigned on 107-count charge by the anti-graft agency.

His trial was stalled due to several appeals in which he wanted the court to quash the charges. His appeals all failed both at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, and since then he was returned to the trial court to face criminal charges before Justice Adamu Bello of an Abuja Federal high Court.

The case came up on October 11, 2011 after a long adjournment from May 2011, but because judges

were holding their annual conference at Sokoto, the matter was adjourned to March 8, 2012

Kalu left PDP when he shown is interest to contest for the Presidential seat and form PPA where

he produced the present governor Theodore Orji who happened to be his Chief of Staff.

Theodore Orji played a fast game on his political godfather by decamping to PDP without properly informing his political benefactor.

Thus he ensured that Kalu lost the senatorial seat under PPA. Kalu is relaxing in a big mansion in Maryland, USA.

AYODELE FAYOSE:

Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State was also apprehended by the EFCC on December 17, 2007. Fayose was impeached by the Ekiti House of Assembly in 2006 over an alleged financial mismanagement.

His House in Ibadan was sealed by the anti-graft commission on September 30 2010. He accused the former Ekiti State governor, Segun Oni of using his office and as a member of PDP to instruct the EFCC to seal his house.

He left PDP in 2010 and joined the Labour Party [LP] where he contested for the senatorial seat in the last April general election. Fayose after losing the poll is now back in PDP again where indication emerged that he may likely contest for the governorship ticket under PDP.

OLABODE GEORGE:

Though, he was never been a civilian governor, but he ruled some states during the military regime.

The PDP Chieftain threatened court action over a newspaper allegation that an N85 billion scam was uncovered in the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) while he was chairman of the NPA board. He described the allegation as senseless, baseless and thoughtless.

He was indicted by the EFCC when it was headed by Nuhu Ribadu on charges of fraud at the NPA. However, he was widely rumoured to have been shielded from prosecution by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In August 2008, the EFCC under its new head Farida Waziri arrested Olabode George in Lagos and arraigned him and four others on a 163 count-charge of conspiracy, disobedience to lawful order, abuse of office and alleged illegal award of contracts worth N84 billion while he was chairman of the NPA. After the trial had started, the EFCC reduced the charge to 63 counts. In October 2009, Bode George was found guilty and sentenced to jail for 30 months.

Back from the prison, the PDP chieftain in Lagos state activeness in politics has remain doubting. Some supporters of the PDP and opposition parties believed that George is no more relevant in Nigeria politics.

HASSAN LAWAL:

A former Minister for works, Hassan Lawal is still under trial over alleged N50billion fraud by the EFCC.

Lawal who was minister under late President regime, Umaru Yar’adua decamped from PDP after he was dropped by President Goodluck Jonathan after the death of Yar’adua and pitched his tent with the Congress of Progressive Change [CPC].

Already, the EFCC has charged the suspect to court.

ALAO-AKALA:

Coming from the South West region is the former Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala. He was arraigned by the EFCC on 11 count charge for awarding contracts without budget provision by defrauding the state N11billion. He has been granted bailed and whilst Nigerians are waiting for the next action to be taken by the EFCC on

Alao-Akala, his family seems to think all is well. His son Ola recently purchased a house in Lekki Phase 1 where he parks a BMW X6 and a Range Rover.

GBENGA DANIEL:

Gbenga Daniel, the former governor of Ogun State, has been re-arraigned this week by the EFCC over the alleged N58billion he looted after being set free by the Federal High Court in Abeokuta.

Daniel was alleged to have converted the state fund to his own pocket by using the state treasury to by properties.

IBRAHIM BABANGIDA:

Reportedly, Babangida is in a league of his own when it comes to looting. The $12 billion oil windfall he alleged pilfered could have brought the people of the North out of poverty and illiteracy. In fact we may not be talking of Boko Haram if the former military leader hadn’t been the father of modern corruption in Nigeria.

Advocates of SNC Bombing Northern Nigeria Not Boko Haram, Says Sheik Gumi

Dr. Ahmad Gumi, Saudi Arabia-based Nigerian Islamic scholar and son of late Sheik Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, has blamed the incessant bombings across Northern Nigeria on advocates of a Sovereign National Conference and not Boko Haram, saying “there is more than meets the eye,” according to a source who heard the speech.

The preacher was speaking in Kaduna at a mosque close to the scene where a police bomb expert, Sergeant Sunday Badang, was killed by a bomb a few months ago.

The worshipper, who prayed at the mosque, briefed SaharaReporters in a telephone conversation.

“Malam made it clear that it is not Boko Haram but those calling for Sovereign National Conference that want to justify their argument for splitting Nigeria. That is why, he said, they are gradually grounding the North and reducing it like Somalia and from there they will have their way out. Not that he is saying that there is no Jamaátu Ahlus Sunna, but all [that] these are plots because they have finished Kano, Maiduguri and now Kaduna and there is indication of them attacking Sokoto.”

The cleric, according to him, insisted that it is the people calling for Sovereign National Conference that are killing people under the name of Boko Haram for condemning their actions and other issues bothering on insecurity in Northern Nigeria.

“We believed what Malam is saying because there is no true and genuine Muslim that will be killing and attacking innocent people. Why is it that we didn’t see this in the past, until now? We are certain there is an agenda against us (Northerners) because what is happening and the sophistication suggest that.”

Gumi, it would be recalled, was held by Saudi Arabian security in relation to the Farouk Abdulmutallab’s 2009 attempted Christmas Day bombing of an American airline after, but he was later set free after it could not be proved he had any negative ties with Abdulmutallab.

The preacher, according to our source, is insisting that Nigerian security must be reviewed because there is no way there will be justice given that the National Security Adviser and Mr. Jonathan hail from the same state and ethnicity.

There is no doubt in my mind that the state of Nigeria now and what majority of Nigerians are witnessing in this present day is as a result of decades of neglect. Now, they, who have neglected and looted the country dry, want to divide the people by all illogical reasons that should never be considered in the 21st century.


Do they care about millions of different tribes who have settled in these different parts of Nigeria? Do they care about happy families who have married from different tribes? Do they care about developing the lands which they have neglected and destroyed by their greed before calling for their own to come back home? Do they care about the financial burden involves in migration? Do they consider the logistics involved in mass migration? Do you really think that they cared about you, your tribe, and your religion?

Please think deep, they have demonstrated nothing but heartaches, destructions and despair to millions. Do not let them destroy the only way that you and your families freely support each other.

There will be too many internal tribal wars, if you allow them to break you now or in the future.

 

 

 Bloodied but Unbowed, We March On 29 Apr 2012

THISDAY became the latest victim of terrorism last Thursday as suicide bombers attacked our offices in Abuja and Kaduna, killing at least eight persons. Immediately these co-ordinated and simultaneous attacks were executed, people started calling and asking: why THISDAY? What did you guys do to them? Later in the evening, a news website reported that “Boko Haram” had claimed responsibility. According to the claim, the attacks were meant to warn the media over biased reporting of their activities. The spokesman said the stories that favoured Boko Haram were not being positively reported while the angle of the security agencies was having the better part of the front page.

If indeed Boko Haram was responsible for the attacks on THISDAY, then a different branch of the sect did it. I know of the Boko Haram that is avenging the death of its leader, Muhammed Yusuf, in the hands of security agencies in 2009. They have been launching attacks on police, army and SSS ever since then. I know of Boko Haram that is seeking to Islamise Nigeria with the backing of some international terrorist groups. They deploy suicide bombers and are obviously carrying out the major operations in the North today. And now, as premature tension begins to build up ahead of the 2015 presidential election, another branch of Boko Haram—hired by some desperate politicians—may have emerged. And, my sense tells me, that political wing was responsible for the murderous attacks on THISDAY.

Why am I saying this? If we examine the allegations attributed to “Abu Qaqa” in the claim against THISDAY, they cannot be substantiated. It is just like giving a dog a bad name in order to butcher it. Any honest observer who could take the pain of doing a content analysis of this newspaper would come to the conclusion that we have been very fair in our reporting of the insurgency. There is nothing we have reported that other papers have not reported. In fact, we are not a “good” option for those who want to read exclusive stories on Boko Haram. As I read through the accusations by “Abu Qaqa” one by one, it became clear to me that whoever authored the claims did not study THISDAY properly. Most of the “offensive” reports “Abu Qaqa” was referring to were not carried by THISDAY. More so, when Boko Haram recently issued a statement threatening some media houses, they specifically named those that they had problems with. THISDAY was not on the list.

All that we have sought at THISDAY is a lasting resolution to the crisis, and this has guided our editorial treatment of stories in reporting the conflict. Personally, I have been a subject of intensive attacks from Southerners and Middle Belters who accused me of being “too soft” on Boko Haram. Some have gone to the extent of cursing me, heaping abuses on me and my family and anything that relates to me. When I wrote to support ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s underground moves to negotiate with some members of the group, I was thoroughly insulted by a man who said his aunty was injured in the UN House attack. When I wrote that the security agencies were wrong to, extra-judicially, kill the Boko Haram leader, someone accused me of trying to be “politically correct” by taking sides with “those animals”.

On this page, I have consistently canvassed a multi-dimensional approach to addressing the conflict. I am a student of conflict and development and I know, judging from case studies around the world, that any conflict that has religious undertone can hardly be fully resolved, much less with military force. Religious extremism is an incurable disease; if you cannot prevent it, then you have to devise a lasting way of containing it. This, unfortunately, involves some shifting of ground, which could be in the form of negotiation, without compromising the sovereignty of the state. The laws must still be enforced. Security must still do its work. But the door to a negotiated settlement must never be shut.

We are not dealing with a case of armed robbery; we are dealing with people who, having been thoroughly brainwashed, are ready to take their own lives in the belief that they will end up in heaven with loads of virgins at their beck-and-call. How do you kill somebody who is ready to kill himself? That is a serious complication. The situation is further worsened by the fact that members of the sect have now acquired the knowledge of how to make explosives. Which means they can make explosives right in their bedrooms and toilets! Are we now going to deploy policeman in every house? Someone can just improvise an explosive device in his sitting room, load it in his car and drive to the next target to unleash terror. The materials are everywhere. You cannot ban fertilisers or condensers or mobile phones. That is why terrorism is very delicate and frustrating to subdue. It is based on these sad realities that I have always advocated a multi-dimensional approach to tame the monster.

Indulge me to reproduce a mail I got when I wrote in support Obasanjo’s underground moves to resolve the conflict. The reader wrote: “In your last article ‘Jos: A Society without Statesmen’, where you commended Obasanjo for visiting the family of the late Boko Haram leader, I was appalled. You call his act that of a statesman?  Apart from the fact that the UN victims were being remembered, the fact that a former president dines with terrorists makes you ‘glad’? So you subscribe to negotiations, appeasement and of course amnesty, while law abiding citizens suffer fear and intimidation… There is nothing statesmanly about Obasanjo’s actions! I do not condone the extra-judicial killings of the Boko Haram leaders, but the law courts are there for them. Moreover they have killed so many policemen and innocent citizens, so where exactly does your sympathy stem from? As our ‘reputable’ journalists tread cautiously not to anger the terrorists (yes, who will bell the cat), stop pushing your theories down our throats! You have the power (of the pen), please don't abuse it!”

So how exactly does THISDAY, of which I’m the Editor, qualify to be a target for Boko Haram for “biased reporting”? I am by no means trying to be apologetic. We owe Boko Haram no apology and they are not in a position to edit our newspaper for us. They cannot determine for us what story should be on the front page and the one that should go inside the pages. But I have gone to this length in laying out the facts just to prove that last Thursday’s attacks on THISDAY were not based on the contents of the newspaper. The allegations by “Abu Qaqa” do not describe THISDAY at all. There is, therefore, more to the attacks than those accusations that are being peddled. It is either their media advisers misadvised them or—more likely—some political interests are at work and they have identified THISDAY as the newspaper that could hurt their narrow and selfish ambitions. So they hired some Boko Haram militants to do their bidding and, as afterthought, have now manufactured evidence to justify the act. I suspect that intimidating THISDAY is one of the strategies of these interests.

Because of the terrorist attacks on THISDAY, my friends have been asking me: “So, Simon, do you still believe in one Nigeria?” I still think we are missing the point. If Nigerians decide that the country should break up, how is that my problem? All I have said and will continue to say is that there is no challenge facing our nationhood that good leadership cannot address. If you create Republic of Southern Nigeria today, I would love to see how the Igbo and the Yoruba will sleep on the same bed without conflict! I would love to see how the South-South will stop talking about “our oil”! We also talk about breaking Nigeria into North and South on the basis of the activities of Boko Haram, forgetting that there is a vast population of Christians even in Borno State, the headquarters of the sect. Are we going to relocate them to Ondo State? What about the millions of Northern Muslims who do not agree with Boko Haram’s philosophy and who are also subjects of the sect’s attacks?

Breaking up the country looks good on paper but there is no neat way of doing it in a country of 250 ethnic groups and 5000 dialects, as Comrade Kayode Komolafe would always say. Every nation has its fault lines. It is the management of these challenges that matters. There will always be challenges, even in a mono-ethnic nation, as we have seen in Somalia. Our resolve should be that the sponsors of Boko Haram will be brought to book. Our resolve should be that our politicians will begin to put the interest of Nigeria above sectional and selfish interests. With the calibre of leaders ruling us at different levels, breaking up Nigeria will only change the shape of the map; our problems will remain intact. Fact.

The outpour of condolences and support after the terrorist attacks on our offices in Abuja and Kaduna helped in relieving the pain. As soon as the news broke, our phones never stopped ringing as people from far and wide expressed shock and surprise at the unprovoked attacks. Many people could not really understand why THISDAY would become a target, no matter the excuse and afterthought being bandied around. My phone was beeping every second such that I had to abandon it for hours and even days to clear my head. The truth is that the hate mongers will not win this war. The outpour of love, in my opinion, is a billion times more powerful than the torrent of bombs unleashed on us, killing innocent people and sending their families into sorrow and pain. How any human being would be happy killing and inflicting pain on others for no just cause is something I will never understand in my life. But the terrorists should know this for a fact: hate can never overcome love. Thanks to all who shared in our moment of pain.

 

Azazi’s Outburst
The National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi, launched a very brutal attack on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the menace of terrorism in the land. He said the party was responsible because of the nature of their politics. “PDP got it wrong from the beginning by saying Mr A can go and Mr B cannot go, and these decisions were made without looking at the constitution,” Azazi said at the second South-South Economic Summit in Asaba. To be honest, I didn’t understand him, but I suspect he was indirectly referring to the “zoning” crisis in the PDP. He seems to believe that the growing violence is an aftermath of the failure of some politicians to get their wish in the last presidential election. “Is it not amazing that after the elections, Boko Haram became better trained, better armed and better funded? But I can assure you that Boko Haram could not have that kind of sophistication without a backing,” he said. I don’t know but as the NSA, I thought his job is to fish out these backers and bring them to justice.

 

Poverty Haram
I recently commented on the attempt to tie the Boko Haram insurgency strictly to poverty. I did argue that the sophisticated weapons being used by the militants don’t come cheap, so blaming the insurgency on poverty will not help matters. A reader, who did not agree with me, asked that I have a rethink over the argument. To be sure, I agree that there is a poverty element. When people are jobless, they become ready tools in the hands of the devil. I will be the first to admit that. But that begs the question on the motive and motivation for Boko Haram. The first thing driving these guys is religious extremism and religious hate. This trend has been there for decades. Poverty may be helping them to recruit foot soldiers, but when you tell a man to be a suicide bomber because you would give N200,000 to his family when he dies, I don’t think his motivation is the money. He believes he is performing a duty for God. That’s the drive. Let’s get these issues right and stop playing games.

 

Lagos Doctors’ Strike
One of the saddest, heart-breaking moments in my life is anytime I hear that doctors are going on strike. I can live with journalists going on strike, or even lawyers, or engineers. I can live with PHCN going on strike. I can never live with doctors going on strike. We are talking about human lives being saved and lost. A life lost can never be replaced. There is a saying I always deploy when discussing the importance of doctors: “After God, it is doctors.” When doctors embark on their strike to make a point against the government, who loses? How many governors’ or ministers’ children die during the strikes? It is the ordinary people that bear the brunt. The current strike by Lagos doctors makes me really sad because I know that they are better off than most other states. I am not saying they don’t have a point, but I don’t know how much sense it makes for doctors to be going on strike at the slightest provocation, like tanker drivers. No, it doesn’t make sense to me.

SOME POLITICAL HIGH PROFILE KILLINGS IN NIGERIA ;

DELE GIWA
The murder of the founding editor of Newswatch, Dele Giwa, on October 19, 1986 can be said to have triggered a boom of high profile murders which are yet to be unraveled by the police. The colourful and celebrated journalist died via a parcel bomb.
ALFRED REWANE
Elder statesman and NADECO financier, Pa Alfred Rewane, was murdered at his Ikeja, Lagos home in 1994. The case has been on since with the trial of suspects who pleaded not guilty to the heinous crime. An avowed critic of military dictatorship, Rewane was also a big businessman.
KUDIRAT ABIOLA
Wife of acclaimed winner of Nigeria presidential election held on June 12, 1993, Mrs. Kudirat Abiola was also felled by assassin’s bullets very close to the Lagos-Ibadan Express toll gate in 1994.
Late General Sani Abacha’s boy, Hamzat Al-Mustapha and others are still being tried for the politically motivated murder.
BOLA IGE
Former Governor of Oyo State and later, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Bola Ige, was also murdered under mysterious circumstances.
That was on December 23, 2001. He was killed at his residence at Ibadan, Oyo State. His family have since given up on the case resigning themselves to fate.
OBI WALI
The seed of murder was sowed in the Niger Delta region of Nigerian when Ikwere, River State born politician of progressive inclination, Dr. Obi Wali, was brutally murdered in his Port Harcourt residence. Although the police questioned his wife back then in the early 90s, the case died just like that.
MARSHAL HARRY
Incidents of politically motivated killings continued in the South-South with the murder of All Nigeria Peoples Party chieftain, Chief Marshal Harry, on March 5, 2003. Like Ige and Rewane, he was killed at home. Nobody is serving any jail term for the crime.
AMINOSARI DIKIBO
The obnoxious wind of death has never stopped blowing in the South as another big politician. Chief Aminasoari Dikibo, was also killed on February 6, 2004. The killers of the PDP National Vice Chairman (South South) were never apprehended, though the police allegedly adopted a face-saving tactics of parading some armed robbers as the suspects.
OGBONNAYA UCHE
It was the turn of South East on February 8, 2003. That was sad day unknown gunmen killed Chief Ogbonnaya Uche, ANPP senatorial candidate for Orlu zone at his Owerri,. Imo State home. His killers are yet to be brought to book.
ANDREW AGOM
A member of PDP Board of Trustees and former boss of Nigeria Airways, Chief Andrew Agom, was also killed on March 4, 2004. Agom was on the entourage of the former Benue State governor, Senator George Akume, when the ugly incident happened.
ALABI OKOJU
Death returned to the South West on May 15, 2005 with the murder of leading financier of Oronmiyan Group, a socio-political organization, Alabi Okoju, at Gbongan by suspected assassins.
IGWE BARNABAS
The Onitsha branch chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Chief Igwe Barnabas, was felled by suspected assassins’ bullets on September 10, 2002. He was killed alongside his wife, Mrs. Abigail Amaka Barnabas.
ODUNAYO OLAGBAJU
Hon. Odunayo Olagbaju was killed on December 21, 2001. Before he was brutally murder by suspected assassins, Olagbaju represented Ile-Ife constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly.
FUNSHO WILLIAMS
Death crept into the Centre of Excellence on July 2006. The victim was Lagos PDP governorship aspirant, Engineer Funsho Williams. He was killed at his Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos home. The police are yet to identify his killers, about four years after.
AYO DARAMOLA
Former World Bank consultant and PDP governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Dr. Ayo Daramola, was also murdered in 2006. The police are still investigating the murder.
GODWIN AGBROKO
The death of chairman, This Day Editorial Board, Mr. Godwin Agboroko, was another challenge to the police. His killers, till date, have not been unmasked.
ABAYOMI OGUNDEJI
Another ThisDay journalist, Mr. Abayomi Ogundeji, was murdered on August 17, 2008. Though the police are alleging armed robbery, those who know better are insisting that his death may have been politically motivated.
BAYO OHU
Another pen pusher and Assistant News Editor of TheGuardian Newspapers, Bayo Ohu, was also killed, leaving law enforcement agencies guessing ‘who dun it’.
BAGAUDA KALTO
Mr. Baganda Kalto of the News magazine was abducted from his room in Durbar Hotel and murdered during the Abacha dictatorship and so far, there are no dues yet as to who did it.
CHARLES NSIEGBE
Again, on November 21, 2009, another politician, this time a political associate of Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, Chief Charles Nsiegbe, was wasted in the street of Port Harcourt.
The Nigeria Police are still running from pillar to post to find a clue to the brutal murder that shocked the good people of Rivers State and the nation at large.
DIPO DINA
The circle was upped again on Monday, January 25, 2010, as suspected assassins shot and killed Otunba Dipo Dina. The late politician was the AC governorship candidate in 2007, popularly called DD-Direct, the accountant met his death around Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.
The question, as the police are investigating the death is, who is the next victim?

 The Murder Of Olaitan Oyerinde: When Are We Going To Overcome By Bamidele Aturu

I lack words to describe my pain concerning the wicked cold blood murder of Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde today in Benin by some agents of darkness. This is certainly too much of a loss for the labour movement and the civil society in general to bear. Olaitan was undoubtedly one of our very best. This is a big tragedy that will be difficult to recover from. He was a thinker and ideologue of the working people and one of the finest socialists that I have ever met.

 He accepted to work for Mr Adam Oshiomhole, the Governor of Edo State, as his Private Secretary based on his internationalist disposition since he hailed from Osun State. I am aware that there have been moves lately by some of the leaders of the NLC to wrest him from Edo State to help rebuild the Congress which has undoubtedly witnessed some leadership crises lately. As a matter of fact he called me to intimate me with the moves and seek my opinion. Now I can only wish that he had left Edo before the wicked assassins and their patrons struck.


Those who masterminded the killing of Olaitan are little minds who were scared of his enormous intellect and organizational acumen, both of which he marshaled in aid of the current Governor of the State. Those who kill men of ideas betray the ignorance that ideas do not die with those who propound or profess them. The ideas cherished and articulated by Olaitan remain indestructible.


The Police and other security agencies must not treat this as one of those unsolvable murders. The IGP and others must get to the root of this unacceptable and callous act of cutting down a truly promising and progressive Nigerian in his bloom for whatever reason. The concern for now is that living in Nigeria has become such a huge risk as law enforcement agents are ever incompetent to apprehend and deal with assassins that are now on the prowl. If we call on the IGP and the Commissioner of Police to resign, they will not heed the call.


Our generation will be failing this country if we do not use Olaitan's painful murder as a basis to retake this country in all sense of that word. We cannot overcome by lamenting. We must act IMMEDIATELY. The ball is in our court. I am willing to join our comrades and compatriots to do anything possible to retake this country. Enough of the nonsense. By Bamidele Aturu.

Okah: Jonathan behind bombings in 2010 - It’s not true – Presidency

A senior Niger Delta militant undergoing trial in South Africa is alleging that President Jonathan was behind two bombings in 2010—one in Abuja on Independence Day and the other in Delta State seven months earlier.

Henry Okah, leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), who is standing trial over the deadly October 1 bombing near the Eagle Square, is making the claims against Jonathan in a sworn affidavit to be filed next week.

Details of the affidavit were published by Premium Times website yesterday, in which Okah said the president and those working for him engineered the blasts as a desperate political strategy.

He said while the Abuja bomb was meant to galvanise opposition against northern leaders ahead of the 2011 election, the bombing in Delta was to create an atmosphere of insecurity so as to upstage Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and replace him with Godsay Orubebe.

“It is my belief that President Goodluck Jonathan’s government working with a faction of MEND planned and executed the bombings of 14 March 2010 and 1 October 2010,” Okah said in the affidavit, according to the website.

But the Presidency yesterday denied Okah’s claims.

“The attention of the Presidency has been drawn to reports in the media of allegations made against President Goodluck Jonathan in an affidavit said to have been sworn to by Mr. Henry Okah who is facing trial in South Africa for his involvement in terrorist acts against the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Jonathan’s spokesman Reuben Abati said in a statement.

“The Presidency categorically affirms that these allegations are false in their entirety and without any factual foundation. As the case of Mr. Okah’s involvement in the plotting and execution of terrorist attacks in Nigeria is already before a court of competent jurisdiction in South Africa, the Presidency does not intend to say anymore on the matter for now and will, in accordance with due process and international law, make a full representation on the matter to the court when the trial opens.

“The Presidency also advises the Nigerian media to respect the sanctity of the legal and judicial processes in this matter and avoid becoming willing tools in the hands of Mr. Okah and his agents in an entirely diversionary trial by the media aimed only at falsely impugning the character and integrity of the President and officials of his administration.”

Okah was arrested in October 2010 in the wake of the Independence Day bombing. He had lost his bail bid, which he now wants to renew through the affidavit.

His trial is set to start on October 1, exactly two years since the incident that occurred close to the Eagle Square in Abuja where President Jonathan was attending Nigeria’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

MEND had claimed responsibility for the attack, but Okah has denied membership of the group and plotting the attacks.

In his affidavit, Okah said Jonathan and his aides organised the attacks to demonise political opponents and win popular sympathy ahead of the 2011 elections.

“The bombing on 1 October 2010 was a platform for the elimination of political opposition from the North in the form of General Ibrahim Babangida. The bombing of 1 October 2010 was also intended by the President Goodluck Jonathan Government to create anti-North sentiments nationwide in order to galvanise support from other sections of Nigeria against other northern candidates in the Presidential elections,” Okah said in a 194-page affidavit.

“The purpose of the 14 March 2010 bombing in my opinion was to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the Niger Delta where President Goodluck Jonathan at that time was fighting to oust the governor Mr. Emmanuel Uduaghan whom President Goodluck Jonathan intended to replace with his Minister for Niger Delta, Mr Godsday Orubebe,” he said. He said he was in touch with the president’s close aides when the October 1, 2010 bomb went off, and had no inkling his arrest was being planned.

Okah first made allegations linking the Independence Day bomb with Jonathan’s aides in an interview with Al Jazeera television weeks after the blast. In the interview, he claimed he was arrested for refusing to influence MEND to retract its claim of responsibility. Since then, Okah has been denied bail at least twice, with one at the South Gauteng High court, Johannesburg where he is filing a new application for bail based on “new facts.”

Okah said he had a long-standing relationship with Jonathan which started in 1999 while he was deputy governor of Bayelsa state. He claimed he was close to Jonathan such that Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, then a minister of Mines and Steel, sought for his support for the President to pick her as petroleum minister.

“The last call I received from Ms Madueke was at 6:41:35 on 4 April 2010 during which she thanked me for my contribution in influencing her appointment as Minister of Petroleum,” he said.

“I knew Goodluck Jonathan when he worked with DESOP.ADEC in Port Harcourt. He is a person who puts up a facade of good boy, while beneath, he is a devious and corrupt man. While he was governor of Bayelsa State, he ran the state under the mud. Imagine Jonathan approving a contract of NGN150 Billion Naira for the supply of law books for the Bayelsa State Ministry of Justice library? While the money was fully paid, there was nothing to show for it. Such profligacy and arrant corruption to ruin his home state! While I defended my Ph.D degree at UNIPORT, Jonathan could not successfully supervise one Master thesis conclusively. The road from Port Harcourt to Yenagoa is in a terrible state. The major highway to Jonathan’s state is in shambles and for him all is fine!
 
See the kind of clueless, devious and corrupt person now standing as President of Nigeria. Do you know that those two children of Jonathan were not delivered by Patience Jonathan? The lady who delivered those children for Jonathan is the younger sister of Diezani Allison Madueke. This is the connection between Jonathan and Diezani Allison Madueke, who is now the major conduit pipe for looting Nigeria’s huge proceeds from crude oil sale. And of course, the Diezani is also looting money for herself and her family. So, if there is no drastic action, Jonathan will not remove Diezani as Minister of Petroleum. I have not even delved into the role being played by Patience Jonathan to loot our treasury through senseless allocations not covered by the budget but made to the office of the said First Lady.
 
Henry Okah is not a mad man. Recall the rush with which Goodluck Jonathan personally announced after the Eagle Square bombing that MEND was not responsible before Henry Okah refuted that claim? This fully lends credence to Okah’s assertion. I know for a fact that Jonathan has a strike force within the SSS made up of Ijaw operatives. I just wonder if this is the strike force Jonathan used to carry out that dastardly bombing of the Eagle Square in order to put Babangida and Buhari in the bad books of Nigerians. Without SSS insider info, how would a bomb laden car have breached all the layers of security at the Eagle Square?
 
Now for the Warri bombing. I am certain that Edwin Clark has been prodding Jonathan to do everything within his power to create a roadblock for Uduaghan. I know for certain that while Edwin Clark was publicly saying he wanted an Urhobo man to replace Uduaghan, secretly, from the discussions I heard in Edwin Clark’s house in Asokoro (off T.Y. Danjuma Drive), Abuja, their real motive and plan is to bring Godsday Peter Orubebe to become governor of Delta State. Now that the PDP structure of Delta state has been placed in the hands of Orubebe and Edwin Clark, it is now apparent that it is an Ijaw man that Jonathan wants to impose upon Delta State. This was after the Warri covert bombing failed to achieve its original objective. Again, this lends strong credence to the assertions by Henry Okah.
 

The U.S. CIA had drawn up an intelligence report that Nigeria would break up by 2015. Instead of Jonathan to focus his attention on rectifying the anomalies in the federating structure of Nigeria and take steps to set up a constitutional conference/drafting committee and save Nigeria from war and collapse, Goodluck Jonathan is rather accelerating the break-up and total destruction of Nigeria as a united nation.
Note that those Ijaw people supporting Jonathan in all these perfidy are not doing him any good.
